Then you loop the loose end of the thread around the plastic piece.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back in the old days, spools were made out of wood. Often the slit/slot in the spool edge would break off and you wouldn&amp;#39;t have a place to secure the thread end and so these plastic buttons were invented to solve that problem.
