I spent my weekend being quite content with not doing a whole lot. We hung out with some good pals, watched some hockey playoff games(which I very seldom do) and just enjoyed the weekend.
With regards to sewing, I decided to deal with some of my kids' old clothes.
I was sorting out some of the out of season clothes, and bringing out some of the stuff from last spring. Some things, I had to put aside for donation.
More often than not, I hear, "Mum, please don't give this away. Please, please, please!".
(I spell mum M-U-M, but my husband claims it is M-O-M. To-may-toes, To-mah-toes)
So, while watching an episode of Bones, I tried to extend the use of some of my daughters' favourite items of clothing.
This was my daughter's favourite dress last spring. It was so snug across the shoulder that I could not make it into a shirt:
A few snips got it ready to be made into shorts:
This top was from two favourite (bestest, mum, bestest) shirts:
I had to cut off the sleeves to enlarge the armholes. The binding of the sleeves with fabric from the white shirt made all the difference.
Finally, a dress that frankly, looks a lot better ON than off. ;)
Well, that was as far as I got before I was pulled aside to participate in a family Rock Band Extravaganza! I am a Rock Star (not).

The shirt-into-shorts might be the best idea I've seen in a while. my 5 year old is in great need of shorts and it will almost take as much time to make 10 pairs as it would to go to the store and shop for them!
I love the refashions! Especially the shorts, they turned out super cute! I might have to use that idea!
It's all really great!! I wouldn't have thought to turn shirts into shorts...
Ming Wai has a pair of shorts that Myrnie has deemed "inappropriate" (they just BARELY cover her panties. hehe. They were hand-me-downs!) I"m going to follow a tutorial on Crafty Daisies (my bloggy buddy's old craft blog) and turn them into a twirly skirt.
And your friend up there was right - refashioning IS faster than shopping...or laundry! Dangerous... ;-)
Oh - what a great idea to turn the swing top into shorts!
Thanks ladies!
@Devona - It is quite quick and simple. The only thing to watch out for is to make sure you leave enough room to make an elastic casing, AND cover the bum. Otherwise you will end up with something like this - http://www.vivelyonline.com/2009/09/bumpity-bump-craft-fail.html
Hehe
Fun :) I have a LOT of shirts sitting in my "turn them into shorts" pile....maybe I'll get around to it, now that the weather is turning warm! It's so hard to find knee-length shorts for under Ernie's skirts- her legs are so long that most shorts from the stores barely cover her underpants :)
These are all great! I never would have thought to turn a shirt/dress into shorts. I want to go through my stash now!
Fantastic ideas!! This weekend, my mom made slip covers for our patio chair cushions. She got this beautiful fabric at Walmart, and she just kinda wacked them together. They turned out beautifully - I wish I had your talents!
The shorts turned out cute! I think you could have also made a tanktop with adjustable straps like the one Dana did at: http://www.dana-made-it.com/2010/04/new-pattern-summer-vacation-dress-and.html

Thanks for inspiring me to make some 'new' items from last summers castoffs! A lot of our now-too-short dresses have become 'tunics' and worn over leggings. :)
You like BONES? I love that show! Haha
And you still remain a genius as refashioning.
Lovely! Your "tomatoes" comment made me laugh, when hubby and I were dating he always said "to-mah-toes" so I would giggle and ask him what french fries were made of. Alas, he has lost that vestige of his commonwealth accent and says "to-may-toes" just like an american now....
Those shorts are adorable. All these upcycle ideas for little girl clothes makes me want to get out there and start trying it for myself.
