I realized on Wednesday night that my little girl has Photo Day on Thursday morning, and that I had Nothing to put her in.
By Nothing, I mean, nothing that is not handed down from her big sister, or nothing that is not Summer. She has lots of cute summery dresses that I've made for her, but nothing that she can wear now that the fall chill has hit us. Her little friends are going to look a cute and spiffy, and she's going to show up in her sister's old dress. Poor little girl...
Guilt has a way of eating away at me.
My poor thing.... I should really make her something. I should run out and buy her something. I should... oh, the stores are close, unless I go to.... *gasp*..... Walmart.
So, this is how at 9pm on Wednesday night, I decided that I should at least try to make her something.
First, I went into my refashion pile of clothing. I found a favorite long sleeved t-shirt of mine. It is still in great condition, but it had shrunk a little too much after I put it into the dryer. It clung to me in ways I was not comfortable with. However, I just love the rich purple color.
I took a dress that fit my daughter well, and using my favorite method (guestimation and eye-balling), I cut out the shape of the bodice of her dress.
After I sewed it all together, I added some flowers to tie it all together:
My little girl, happy with her new dress.
Guilt, my friends, is a great motivator.

1) It's CA-YUTE.
2) In the last shot, the dress TOTALLY reminds me of a kimono...with that thick band of gorgeous fabric around the middle?
3) Y'all have WALMART in Canada?! Oh, the HUMANITY! (On behalf of all Americans...I sincerely apologize. It's like a DISEASE. A really cheap, convenient DISEASE.)
Wonderful!
Yes, it's like the obi, but i love this style!
Adorable! I have an old short-sleeved maternity sweater in my refashion pile, and I plan to make it into a dress for my daughter. It will look great for picture day. I better get started on it now so I'm not waiting until the night before...which is my normal mode of operation!
Ah, yes, guilt. It kicks me in the pants a lot too. :) Love the dress... she looks gorj!
Turned out so cute! I love how you can reuse things :)
That is just so special! She must love it! I remember when my mom would take on little sewing projects when I was little and it always made me feel like a princess.
That color is absolutely gorgeous ! And she looks so proud ! High five mommy ! Great choice on fabric :) And I love the little monologues you say to yourself.
That turned out really well! And guestimation and eyeballing are the best skills one can have. Haha
I love the big band! Is the band made of stretchy fabric as well? If not, is it difficult to get on?
@Jennifer -
Yes, that is nice, thick and stretchy fabric.
And no, it wasn't too hard to get on. I just measure it to fit, pin the right sides together and sew.
I did use my serger to sew the fabric together. I find that the serger does a better job with knits than my limited zigzag stitch on the sewing machine.
