Compost Sifter - quick and dirty!

I haven't just been sewing, you know! Although, if you ask my family, they would make it seem like I have not detached myself from the sewing machine!

Anyway, I just thought I'd show you the quick and dirty compost sifter or sieve that I made.

As you can see, it's just four pieces of wood nailed together. I stapled gutter guard mesh (threaded together to form a big piece of mesh) onto the wood to use as the sift. You can use chicken wire, but I find that this guard mesh is sold in small amounts and is quite cheap to buy.
So, this sifter works pretty well, except I will probably nail extra pieces of wood onto the sides to prevent soil from dropping off the edges.
So, for under $5, I have myself a compost sifter. I'm impressed at how well this simple device works. Now, I can spread beautifully composted material into my "vegetable garden" (still waiting for the first seeds to germinate... sigh).
Do you compost?

Love this! I think I actually have chicken wire in the shed (the previous owners left a lot of random stuff around the house.)

We've got an enormous pile of leaves that I would LIKE to compost, but I don't know how...

I just dump everything into a compost bin, and turn it once in a while.
I know people who just leave leaves in a big pile - that's their compost. You just have to take a pitch fork and turn it every once in a while. I don't think it has to be much more complicated than that
My neighbors won't like me very much if I did that though - our yards are too close together!

I love composting! I know so many people who say "hey, if I'd known it was *this* easy, I would've started a LONG time ago!"

In other news, I nominated you for an award here!

Hah Su! I was looking at your sifter photo and thought to myself "hey, it almost looks like the sifter I made last summer by stapling gutter-guard to some wood framing", and then I read the text and found you did the same thing. Great minds thinking alike again! :-)

Cam - I can't believe you used gutter guard too. That's too funny! I thought I'd be the only one to do something like that
