Tutorial: Fabric Hairband

The other day, I walked into a high end yoga boutique. You see, I was looking for the hairband that someone raved about. It is a piece of fabric hairband to hold hair off the face during yoga. I think it's made of some sort of special sweat-wicking material, and the whole thing is flat to prevent chafing.
Well, I just couldn't justify the price they were asking.
I don't have any special material, but I have a lot of scrap knit fabric leftover from previous projects. I figured that I could easily make a few of these myself, sans special fabric.

Anyway, I'm posting this as a tutorial because it actually took me the whole episode of Mythbusters to figure out how to join the ends together neatly. I was very distracted.
I figured I might as well share this with all of you.

Here's a sample of a few I made. Some are headed to my sis in Toronto.

Here's the tutorial.
I hope it's easy enough for you!

I used a 4"x 20" piece of scrap knit. The stretch is lengthwise.
4" wide gives a headband about 1.35" wide. I measured around my head, and got 22".

Tada!

Beautiful! Now, is it just me, or is there a special way to keep them on your head. Headbands just always slip right off--I think I may have a pointed head!

Cute, cute, cute! I'm going to have to get some more stretchy fabric, and when I do, this is the first thing I'll make! Thanks! :)

Just beautiful - and a very professional finishing!

2 questions please - you metioned using knit fabric - just curious - it's just a knit? No lycra needed or seperate elastic insert to make it work? (If not, this is really great!)

Also, all the headands look fabulous! And the junior models are adorable - I'm wondering what are the measurements, please, for children's headbands? Thank you and thanks for a great tute!

In return for my questions I have a possible tip:

Celeste Lux mentioned headbands slipping off. I have read bow-making hair clip tutorials that suggest for children with fine hair, one wau to keep the clip from slipping is to glue somthing to the side of the clip that touches the hair.

Materials suggested are some of that rubbery bubbly-mesh stuff people line their shelves with (I saw some in Walmart recently), or a grosgrain ribbon. Maybe sewing one of these choices to the inside top of the headband might help keep them from slipping? Just a thought - hope it can help!

Yes, just regular knit fabric works really well.
You just HAVE to make sure that the stretch is length-wise.
Of course, if you have fabric with lycra in it, the hairband works even better. I have made quite a few of these since writing the tutorial, and my favourite ones are still those made with scrap knit fabric.

"I'm wondering what are the measurements, please, for children's headbands?"
If the fabric is really stretchy, I use 18". Otherwise, I use 19" in length.

Good Luck!
