Vintage Pattern Review: Butterick 6089

In case you are wondering, I'm still here! I just got caught up in something, and had trouble accessing my computer.

Yes, this is another sewing review!

It seems as though I've caught the sewing bug, right? I can't stop myself from just checking out the next pattern. Well, as far as addiction goes, I guess this one is not too bad. Especially since I seem to be able to find different sources for fabric.
Like this cute bed sheet that I found. Someone once told me that I should never use bedsheets to make clothes out of. It is something to do with the texture or the feel of the sheets, perhaps. When I saw the cute print on this sheet, though, I just had to get it.

So here we are with another pattern review. This one is a vintage! Vintage patterns are adorable.

Pattern Description:
Girls' Dresses from 1970s
Girl's 3-tier Dress, fitted bodice with back zipper.
I made view A, the sleeveless version.

Pattern Sizing:
Size 6X

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes! So cute!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, although if you've just started out sewing, the instructions are brief.
For example, to attach the zipper, the instructions were "Apply ZIPPER to back opening edges, placing pull tab 3/8" below neck seamline."
And that was it! No pictures. Nothing. See what I mean by brief? I'm a visual person, so I prefer pictures rather than words.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I loved sewing with this dress, despite the brevity of the instructions. A very nice vintage pattern.

Fabric Used:
Cotton-poly blend.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I had to resize it quite a bit, because I wanted to make a size 4. However, I miscalculated, so I ended up making about a size 3.
I also left out the ribbon.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I would sew it again - I already have a fabric in mind.
I don't know if I would recommend this pattern, because I think that there are actually other contemporary patterns out there that are similar. Check out this pattern by McCall's. There are good reviews for it. I just did not feel like buying a new pattern especially since I have a similar vintage pattern in store.

Conclusion:
I love it! It's a cute dress.

My daughter decides to wear a shirt underneath because it's still cold out.

I use vintage sheets to sew with all the time - they are already soft, the prints are usually really cute and there is a lot of fabric to work with in case you stuff up! The only thing to watch out for is the centre is usually worn thin, but if you can cut your pieces around that it's just like any other fabric. I love your little dress, it's just the right thing to give a sheet new life!

Thank you, Myrnie!

Kristy - Thanks for the tip! Good thing these sheets were in good shape. I'll be watching out for worn centres when I'm shopping for vintage sheets.

That is so cute! It came out great. I agree with Kristy, above - but I will add, don't let people tell you what you can or can't do, but experiment, experiment, experiment! Some of the best results come from thinking 'outside the box', or against the rules!
Please check out my blog, if you have a spare minute - I pretty much focus on my sewing projects most of the time, many of which are reproduction vintage garments, too, using unusual materials (like tablecloths!).
