Reusable Serviettes - A Green Idea

In our effort to be more conscientious about reducing waste, we've manage to reduce the use of paper towel in our household by using microfiber cloth about 99% of the time. You should totally check out your local fabric store the next time you are there. There is a microfiber fabric for every type of cleaning.

One of the things we have not done, is to reduce the use of paper napkins. Every time we sit down for dinner, we use a paper napkin per person. Each time, I think to myself that there has to be a better way, that I should be making reusable napkins. Aunt Lolo's post on cocktail napkins jolted me into action.

I went into my scrap bin, and picked out the cotton scraps that I had. Afterall, they were just sitting there waiting to be made into something. Anything that could be cut into a 10"x10" square was game.

Since this is for our personal use, I did not bother making the napkins double sided. Just single sided, with a roll-over hem to finish the sides (btw, what a great way to practice a serger's rollover hem function).

Now we have no excuse!

Love it! You know, we have a "weight loss competition" going on- whoever can get to a certain weight, by a certain post-baby week, before the other wins a set of napkins. She said she's practicing making MY napkins. heehee... :)

I found a stack of napkins at Goodwill for $.50 each, and decided I really didn't need to sew any. I think I might have copped out... but yours are adorable!

Aww...those are faBU napkins! You know, it's funny - we don't USE napkins here. As BBJ gets older, I'm sure we will. I have some handknit washcloths I've made, and I just wet one up after dinner and wash the kiddo off. Is it weird, not using napkins? We always had them when I was a kid...but after I got married, I realized that they mostly just got crumpled, but never used. Hmm...

LOVE your little basket of napkins, Su. Great job!

We don't use napkins regularly either (our kids also just use a washcloth), but always for company. I have been meaning to make some, it's just a matter of getting my arse to the fabric store.
I Love how fun and cheerful yours are! And bravo for reducing the waste.
