I like this recipe because it uses ingredients that you can easily find at home. Also, it doesn't make too much clay. This way, you won't feel like such a chump when you have to toss out half of the clay you made.
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup hot water from tap
Dissolve (most of) the salt in water, and add flour. Knead a little to form the consistency you are looking for. If it's too dry, add water. Too wet? Add flour.
After you are done making fun shapes, place the shapes on a baking sheet. Stick the sheet in the oven at 200 Fahrenheit for about 1 hour, flipping shapes halfway.
Earlier this week, my kids made this:

When the clay shapes are dried, you can paint them with acrylic, or even tempera paint.
Notice the intense concentration:

They are quite proud of their work. The plan is for me to varnish them (I hope to get to this soon!). When the snow melts, I'm told that we will be placing the treasures in secret spots, in our garden. Sounds like fun!

So, so cute!
I love the idea of hiding them around the garden...like fairies and gnomes!
Those are so cute. My DH would love to make and paint those. You could use the spray paint form of Poly Acrylic to seal them if you don't have time to varnish each and everyone of them. You'll have to elevated them on something small so that they don't stick. Do each side and presto...you're done.
I know as a mom to young children, time is hard to find.
Happy Craftng.
