Sew an Easy Little Girl's Ruffle Skirt

Sometimes when someone finds out that I made my daughters' outfit, I get into this kind of conversation.

Friend: Wow, that's great!

Me: Thanks, I enjoy sewing.

Friend: I have a sewing machine, but I don't really know how to sew. I've just made stuff like pillows and curtains.

Me: Really? Then, you sew! You're a sewer.

Friend: Nah, not really. I wish. I can't make my son's/daughter's outfit....

Well, allow me to let you in on a not-so-secret secret. I'm not really a "sewer" either, in the real sense of the word. I tend to break all the rules, take shortcuts, and do things that will make real seamstresses shake their head in dismay. In part, this is due to my impatience and general laziness.

However, I truly believe that if someone can sew curtains and pillow cases, they can easily (easily!!) sew clothing. They key is to start small. For example, they can make this easy skirt:

My daughter's hip measures 24". I divided that by two to get 12" and added 2" for ease. That gave me a 14"x14" skirt body measurement.
For the ruffle, 1.5x 14"= 21"

Oh yes, you should have two of these skirt body/ruffle combos

You're done!
If you like, you can add some embellishments. I made this skirt for Valentines, so I added some hearts.
