When I was a teenager, one of my art teachers, Miss Nora, introduced rope craft to me. We used sisal rope to decorate mason jars, old jam jars, and other assorted containers. Sometimes we would leave the ropes as is, other times, we would paint them.
Earlier this week, I spent some time with my kids wrapping potted jars with some leftover yarn. These pots are destined for their room and we just had to make sure that they matched with the rest of the decor.
We used craft glue to stick the yarn onto the jar, and it seems to hold well. My 5-year-old was able to do this craft by herself, but I had to help her push the yarn close together. My 3-year-old had me help her turn the jar around as she glued the yarn on.
You could reuse old plastic peanut butter jars, if you are worried about breaking glass. Instead of using the decorated jars as pot planters, you could use them as a pen holder, or just pretty knick-knack holders.
Edit:
Oh, I know! You are wondering how is it that I can have plants in a jar without drainage holes. Well, I have a LOT of plants growing this way, in my house. I cover the bottom of the jar or pot with rocks or marbles, and then I layer on some broken terracotta pots. Add some soil, and a hardy plant, and you are set. Just be careful not to over-water. I know, I know, I'm breaking all the rules, but my plants seem to have no complaints!

Aww, that's so cute! I like that you could add holes and make it a pot, or leave it as is and use it as a vase. Great idea! I'll be linking.
I think I have an idea what Lam, Mini, and I will be doing soon... :)
